Description
This is the fifth in a series of five images where this heron, in a matter of seconds, pierced a large wide-mouth bass with its beak and pulled it from the water. In this shot, there is drama in the power of the heron, the horror in the bass' gasp, and the amazing color match of the two creatures. This was the first time I'd ever seen a heron use its full power for a fish catch. In seconds, it opened its wings, with full might it struck, and again using its wings, it pulled the fish from the water. It then lifted off and flew to another part of the shoreline to eat the fish in one gulp.

Thanks for following the sequence - it was truly remarkable. It happened so fast I really didn't even understand what was happening as it happened. The photos told the story later. It's unnerving to me to look at these images. I feel sorry for the fish and I'm ill at ease with the brutality of instinct - as seen in the heron's face. The sequence actually continued as the heron, with trouble, lifted off and carried the bird to another spot along the shoreline. But I was shooting into the sun, so, with each shot, the photos continued to lose quality. Thanks again, Kate!
